The New York Times is looking for a hands-on engineering manager to lead a newly formed team focused on improving how we ingest, store, and deliver our photography.You'll lead a team that works closely with our award-winning photographers, photo editors and journalists, to define, prototype and build great photojournalism tools that enable our visual journalism to reach as wide an audience as possible.

Additionally you'll lead a team that is focussed on digitizing and indexing our massive photo archive, using state of the art technologies and make this archive available to others. You'll spend most of your time leading and building alignment, but will also be performing code-reviews and jumping in from time-to-time.

Responsibilities:

Lead development of a new digital asset management system that scales to handle millions of photos.
Partner closely with photographers and photo editors to understand their needs and make them part of the development process.
Lead and grow passionate engineers.
Recruit, lead, and maintain a talented and diverse engineering team.
Perform code reviews and provide constructive feedback.
As a hands-on technical position, you are expected to spend about 25% of their time coding.
Champion build automation, continuous integration, and delivery.
Coordinate with different technology and product teams to ensure the best experience of our world-class photography in our digital and print products.

Qualifications:

3+ years directly managing a medium to large (5-8 person) engineering team.8+ years of hands-on software engineering.
Experience leading full-stack engineering teams - with a strong user-experience focus - that implement highly-available, critical applications from concept to production in a cloud environment.
Working knowledge and experience in at least one backend language (preferably Java, Python, or Go), as well as modern JavaScript - both core ES6+ and MV* frameworks (preferably React and Redux).
Knowledge of different databases and storage technologies, both relational and nonrelational.
Experience working with cloud-based, managed services on AWS or GCP.
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to influence key stakeholders and build consensus among contributors at all levels.
Experience with TDD, Continuous Delivery, and the Agile software development cycle
Experience working in a dynamic, highly collaborative environment - with multiple streams of work happening in parallel.
Desire to move fast and build through prototyping and rapid feedback.
Bsc/Masters in Computer Science, or equivalent experience
Experience or interest in photography, journalism and media preferred
