Chaucer’s Digital Afterlife; Hypertext & Historical Narrative
Please join us for the February DCHDC Meetup! Our two guests will be Jonathan Hsy of George Washington University and Christian Wachter of the University of Göttingen.
Jonathan Hsy is Associate Professor of English at George Washington University and co-director of GWU’s Digital Humanities Institute. A scholar of medieval literature, translation studies and disability theory, he will discuss the institute’s recent symposium on “Global Chaucer and Shakespeare in a Digital World,” which examined the afterlives of these two worldwide literary icons in a variety of online contexts in multiple cultures and languages.
Christian Wachter is a doctoral candidate in history at the University of Göttingen in Germany. His dissertation examines how historians construct historical information and how they communicate it to the public. His talk will discuss a segment of his research that uses eye tracking and other research tools to examine how readers absorb historical information when it’s communicated in hypertext form as opposed to more traditional linear, printed narratives.
As usual, our schedule will be:
- 6:30—Arrivals and socializing, with a break partway through for introductions
- 7:00—Lightning talks
- 7:30—Announcements and more socializing
- 8:00—Formally adjourn the meeting to a local bar/eatery
In order to have topics for the lightning talks, we would like to invite members to nominate yourselves to give lightning talks at a future meeting using the following Doodle poll link:
This poll is just for people who would like to be speakers at future meetings. Please continue to use the interface here to RSVP to attend future Meetups.
